Traffic safety plays an important role for individuals of any age. For children, bicycle and pedestrian safety are fundamental in decreasing childhood injuries and fatalities. Studies show that most traffic safety injuries can be prevented through education and enforcement. The risk of permanent or fatal head injuries can be reduced by 87% simply by wearing a bicycle helmet. In addition, under California law anyone under 18 years of age can be cited for riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or roller skates without wearing a properly fitted helmet.
Through funds from traffic citations and grant awards, Riverside County Injury Prevention Services can provide a bicycle helmet sale at a low cost of $5.00 dollars per helmet. These low cost sales are offered to school sites and community organizations throughout Riverside County. Any helmet given under this program will include proper education and instruction on the how to correctly wear the helmet. Schools and community organizations generally utilize this program to promote bicycle safety month or traffic safety activities.
